SodaStream Soda Maker Review

For Christmas I got my son AJ one of these Sodastream Soda Makers. He’s been using it for two months now, and here are the benefits that we see to using it:

  1. Water Tastes Better – You control the water source.  We are lucky enough to be able to drink well water which is delicious. I don’t know if you would have the same experience with tap water.
  2. Drink Less – AJ finds that he drink less because it’s not as easy as popping open a can; however, it does taste much better.
  3. Carbonate To Your Liking – You can carbonate the water to be as sparkly as you wish, including making it extra-sparkly so you can add juice to make a sweetened carbonated beverage. Doing this with regular sparkling water degrades the carbonation.
  4. No Aluminum Cans – No aluminum cans to collect and cash in. Not to mention the hazards in using aluminum based products.
  5. No Grocery Shopping – No weekly trips to the grocery store to buy 12 packs of sparkling water.
  6. Always In Stock – Our local store never kept a very big stock of the water, so sometimes we were stopping by the store and finding none on hand.
  7. No Storage Area Necessary – Don’t need a space to store the 12 packs; just a place on your counter.
  8. Don’t Have to Lug Into the House – This is great not having to cart 12 packs into the house.
  9. Eco-Friendly – The Sodastream comes with a BPA-free carbonating bottle has a lifespan of 3 years and is not made with any polycarbonate materials or substances that produce phthalates or PCBs.  The 12 packs came in a cardboard container, so using the Sodastream eliminates that waste as well. AJ ordered the 1/2 liter travel size bottle since he never drinks an entire liter before it goes flat.
  10. No Electricity or Batteries Needed – no cost for operating.
  11. Less Expensive – Costs for the 12 pack when it was not on sale were $0.70/liter.  By investing in the 3 exchange kit, AJ could be paying as little as $0.20/liter.

If you are interested in buying a Sodastream, they have a referral program. Currently you could get a $10 off coupon if you buy directly from Sodastream, but you will need to contact me with your name and email address so that I can send you a referral link. Sodastream has not paid me to do this review, I just think it is a good product.

  1. This is great, it sounds like the price has come down some since I last checked about a year ago. The convenience is of course a huge plus, but I’ve been resistant because (last year) my boughten 2-liter bottles (69 cents, approx 0.0103 per ounce) were cheaper.

Hi Terry, buying more carbonators is definitely the least expensive route. Let me know if you decide to get one! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I saw this reviewed somwehere else awhile back and I think it’s a neat little product. I like that it has cut down your husband’s consumption (I’m a soda-holic and trying to cut back), but I’m worried it will just end up being another gizmo sitting in our house collecting dust.

Hi SMT: Actually AJ is my son. He is a very dedicated sparkling water drinker, so thankfully it has gotten a lot of use. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Interesting–DH and I used to drink much more soda in the States . . .we would splurge on the ginger brew kind once a week. And sometimes I’d make our own lemon-ginger fizz out of soda water and my own syrups. Mmmm.

But here in France, we actually hardly drink anything carbonated and don’t give it a second thought. I actually have no idea why that is. . . cultural brainwashing?

Still, your home carbonation system sounds like fun.

  4. Well, I’m still working on my savings toward a $250 Penguin unit. In the meanwhile, I use a $30 Fizz Giz. The small hand held portable Fizz Giz soda maker and their special Fizz Giz caps lets consumers make their own delicious carbonated drinks in the same bottles you buy soft drinks in now – so the bottles are free.

You can buy name brand soda syrups of your choosing just by dropping in at beverage distribution warehouses. Yep, Sunkist Orange, Coca Cola Classic, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, A&W Root Beer, Mtn Dew – all of them are available. You can even buy them at places like Sam’s Club. Your 12oz home made name brand drinks will cost you about 19-cents each. That’s not much more than a buck-a-six-pak. Compare that to $3.50 in grocery stores. If you like that, it means you’re in to saving money. So why spend $250 on a carbonator when you can get one for $30 that does the same thing and doesn’t take up counter space?

@Stefanie, If you like little individual single serving sized drinks, a helpful tip can be found at http://www.sodastreamAlternative.com

Meanwhile, I’ve almost saved up enough dough to get a SodaStream Penguin model with the glass carafes. It’s a very pretty unit.
