A Week’s Worth of Veggies for $15

I was able to stop by a “ranch” produce market on Monday afternoon, and quite surprised to see that most of the vegetables and fruits were product of the USA. It is common in Arizona to see that a lot of our produce comes from Mexico.

Here’s what I found:

  • $2.99 – 4 pounds red grapes
  • $1.35 – 8 zucchini squash (3.97# @ $0.34/#)
  • $1.00 – 2 bunches radishes
  • $1.00 – 2 small heads red leaf lettuce
  • $1.00 – 2 medium/large heads cauliflower
  • $1.00 – 1 large head broccoflower
  • $1.00 – 3 yellow bell peppers
  • $1.55 – 5 medium tomatoes (2.63# @ $0.59/#)
  • $1.31 – 8 brown onions (3.36# @ $0.39/#)
  • $1.19 – 5 peaches (1.73# @ $0.69/#)
  • $1.00 – 2 bunches green onions
  • $0.82 – 6 Bartlett pears (2.42# @ $0.34/#)

No tax for food in the small city I was in.

It has been such a long time since I’ve seen these kinds of great prices for produce. The zucchini was beautiful and fresh. I love zucchini squash, and haven’t seen it that cheap in I don’t know when.

I stopped by a store yesterday that specializes in produce, fresh flowers, plants, and organic (expensive) and gourmet groceries.

Cauliflower was 2.79 A HEAD. TWO SEVENTY NINE. This is September in Michigan. Cauliflower is being picked everywhere right now. Tomatoes should be at give-away prices. New crop of apples are coming in. Squash should be 3/$1, not $1.39 A POUND.

Not sure what’s going on here in my state, but I usually eat really cheap during Sep & Oct because of the farm stands everywhere, but not this year.

    I’m in shock.

Mary, I don’t blame you, I’d be in shock, too!! I like to try to eat seasonally, but the stores sure don’t want to help us out any there sometimes. I hope your prices go down soon! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Good buys! If the “ranch” market is the one I’m thinking of, you might like Lee Lee. There’s one at Dobson and Warner, in Chandler. Amazing produce; often the prices are good.
