Today I am going to share a video with you – I wanted to show you my seed cage that's in my master bathroom that Mr. A built for me a couple of years ago. Since we have such a short growing season in the Arizona desert for tomatoes, I have to get them started in January so they will be big enough to put out by February 15th. I also start eggplants, and those can go out March 1st. I use my cage to protect the baby seedlings from our cats, been there, done that.
First a couple of regular photos to show you a bit more detail. I have two shop lights in the age, and wire cable is looped around the shop light, then is tied to chain, the chain goes down to a hook at the bottom, so I can adjust the height of the shop lights.
As you can see, I have lots of loops to work with, so if by some chance my tomato plants grow to be 15″ tall, I can just keep moving the chain so the light goes higher and higher!
Here's a photo with the fluorescent lighting on, with the labeled seed containers. Those black pans you see, they are great for catching spills, and I got the two of them for one dollar from Goodwill. I wasn't sure what I'd use them for when I got them, but they seemed like they would come in handy.
When we first moved here, we explored the abandoned property next door. We've gleaned quite a bit of usable product from the place, even though it was probably considered junk to someone else. Like these little seed containers. It seems the previous owners had a nursery and left dozens of tiny planters spilled on the ground. I started calling it “The Mobile Home Depot” because there was so much stuff over there that we could use! We built our goat barn with panels of plywood that was laying out filled with nails. It was time consuming to remove all the nails, but free! And after some patching and a coat of paint, who knew what condition the wood was in when we started out?
Anyway, these little seed containers come in handy at this time of the year and I wash them out and bleach them, then air dry them about a week prior to planting my seeds.
I put a piece of masking tape on each container, then write the name of the seed I'm putting in that container. Then I'm ready to start planting seeds.
Here's the video, let me know what you think of my seed cage!
