Gardening and Blazing Speeds!

I’m heading out to see if I can get my seeds planted. I usually overwhelm myself and try to get EVERYTHING started that I want, but I told myself this morning as I was milking that I would only plant a few things and I can plant again in two weeks.

I started out with lettuce, radishes, kale and Swiss Chard. Then I realized I have to plant beets, too. Especially since they take a long time to mature into nice sized beets. After I sat down and looked at my seeds, I realized I want to also plant bunching onions, and spinach.

So I’m planning to plant:

#332 Space Spinach
# W468 Bunching Forest Onion
#203 Pinetree Lettuce Mix (A collection of sweet leaf lettuces for continuous harvest)
#94 Bright Lights Swiss Chard
#W239 Chioggia Beets (Bright red exterior w/rings of pink & white inside)
#301 Cherry Belle Radish
#19101 Konserva Kale

I made breakfast for everyone, and I am hoping AJ remembered he said he would help me today.

I was a little worried about my new Internet connection last night as it seemed my speeds were way down. But this morning they are blazing fast again.

Now off to shovel goat and turkey manure.

  1. Wow! You’re really getting started early! So…the lettuces in the pinetree mix won’t bolt to seed before it gets cool? I’ll have to try to find that.

Beets, baby beets! Soooo wonderful! 🙂

  2. Funny – good question! The simple answer is no. The lettuce must be mature in order to go to seed or to bolt. 🙂 As long as I keep the babies watered, they should be okay. I anticipate they will have leaves 6″ to 8″ long within a month, and it will begin to cool down by then. You can only get this seed mix at Pinetree’s website or I guess you could call it in. 500 seeds per packet at $1.10. It’s better to order all your seeds at once, since shipping is $3.50 for $0 to $19.99. Let’s see… even if a person paid for the one packet, $3.50 shipping, that’s $4.60 for 500 seeds. If we anticipate planting only half those seeds, that’s 250 heads of leaf lettuce for $4.60. Not even two cents per head! Radishes are simple to grow, so order a pack of them, too. 🙂
