I have always thought that would be neat to live in an area like that where life is not so hectic and it's just normal routine to take a little walk to the store and buy fresh vegetables and bread for dinner. Thanks for your comment, Berry Girl!

We buy our bread at Costco and get two loaves for the price of one at the grocery store. I would shop at the day old bread stores, but they are getting few between here in Southern California.

I rarely buy bread anymore, I now bake my own.... I haven't figured out white bread yet, but it is easy and really cheap to make a good Italian loaf. I use the recipes in this outstanding book:

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Artisan-Bread-Five-Minutes-Revolutionizes/dp/0312362919/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1250645140&sr=8-1" rel="nofollow">Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking</a>

Having a good baking stone is essential, but no other special equipment is required.... The recipes in this book also make very good pizza crust and other items.... I use the same simple recipe to make English muffins, pizza crust and Italian bread. If I had to add it up, I think the four-pound batch costs me less than $1, and I use it to make 3 or four different items.
