One of my coworkers was telling me about these Magic Erasers.
I had mentioned that I was dreading having to clean the guy shower at my place (the master bathroom is mine, Mr. A and our sons use the other bathroom) because it gets pretty grungy and I wasn’t looking forward to blasting it with chemicals to get it clean.
I hate breathing in any kind of chemical cleaning fumes, I’ve always hated the smells and besides it exacerbates my asthma.
So she told me I should check out the Magic Erasers, made by Mr. Clean. I decided to buy a box. From Walmart they cost $3.96 per box of four sponges. I was really impressed by how well they work, but I was not impressed by how soon they are destroyed. I used three of them cleaning the shower and bathtub.
I used the last one scrubbing bugs from the front end of my vehicle. The product does seem to work very well, much better than a normal sponge and the product works with ONLY water.
It really does seem like magic, how Magic Erasers work. It’s a sponge, and the only thing I can think that makes it work so well is it is extra dense, so it seems to grab debris from surfaces. I seem to recall having seen dense sponge at fabric stores, which would definitely be much cheaper.
I don’t think I’ll buy the brand name again, however, since they are so easily ruined. It’s disappointing that a product that works so well, is no good after such little use. They are definitely not a frugal item.
Have you tried the Magic Erasers? What do you think of them?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my magic erasers. I do usually buy the target brand though, and I buy the kind without the cleaner in it, but that has the blue scrubby side. These are the original magic erasers and I find they last the longest. My mom has chemical sensitivities and I was able to use them in her house with no problems.

Hey! I didn’t know there were GENERICS!! Cool. I will have to look for them. I did like the way they worked. I used the last one over the weekend to clean the bugs off the grill of my Pathfinder and they worked great! Thanks for commenting!

I *love* them! The generic ones are okay (I’ve bought Safeway brand before) but I think the other ones are a little better. And they aren’t like regular sponges so they get used up fast but I only wet one corner at a time and they seem to work longer that way.

Cool, thanks for the tip! I will have to try that and see if they will last longer for me. Thanks for commenting!

I definitely had a good experience with the erasers. You’re right that they die a little quickly, so definitely check out the generic. But also write a praising letter to the company and you’ll get some good coupons that should help make them more affordable.
Have you considered using something like Showermate? That way, the place would be partially cleaning itself and you wouldn’t have to deal with fumes. Or, if you did come back with a Magic Eraser, you’d have to scrub less and so use less.

Abigail, I have never heard of the Showermate! I looked on Amazon but didn’t find anything. Can you give me more information on it? And that’s a great idea to write to the company. I used to take the time to do that years ago. I will have to sit down and shoot them a letter. Thanks for the suggestion!

I love! Magic erasers… I don’t use them on everything b/c they are a little pricey! But they are pretty fantastic!

I love the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers but I only buy the ones with the blue scrubby side because they last longer. I also don’t use them for every day chores only for cleaning harder items, like your car, the walls (they get crayon out well and handprints), my sons shoes, inside the stove, etc.

I own a children’s consignment store and we use these things daily. I use Rubbermaid antibacterial all-purpose cleaner with them. I spray a small corner of the sponge with the cleaner and go at it. We use them to clean all types of plastic toys, white sandals and the white portion of tennis shoes (try it, you won’t believe it), they take off the scuffs on toys like Leap Frog and Fisher Price products, etc.
We use 1-2 of them a week on average, and they get used right down to the last nubbin. I buy the 2/$1 ones from our local Ace hardware store. Some of the generics are stronger than the brand-name ones and will last longer. You don’t need to scrub hard with them – just rub lightly and you’ll get the same results.
I really wouldn’t bother using them in a shower though. Try buying Comet Cleanser spray for that. Target carries it. It’s a white bottle with a green label. Spray the shower and let it sit for a bit, then rinse with water. That stuff is better than any other cleaner I’ve tried. The Rubbermaid cleaners are carried at Menards and the lemon anti-bac is the best stuff we’ve ever used at the shop. No rinsing ever is needed with it, doesn’t harm your hands, etc. Believe me, I spend hours a day cleaning…I know where of I speak!

Hi Mary – thanks for the great information on the Magic Erasers, and I had no idea that Ace sold them for such low prices! I would give the Comet Cleanser a try, but I am very sensitive to chemicals and their fumes, so I’d be afraid to try it if I bought it. I will keep it in mind for recommending to others. Thanks for visiting and commenting!

Oh, one thing I should have mentioned – magic erasers of any type will take colored paint off kids’ toys. So, use with caution – I’ve rubbed the color right off of many toys over the past couple of years!
